Types of paint finishes for your house

There are many reasons you could need a painting job done in your house. When the time to look for a painter comes, you are spoiled with many options on the types of finishes to apply.

Finishes are applied according to the use of a room or part of the house due to their different qualities. A professional painter will usually work through the options with you. Here are some types of finishes you might want your painter to use and their common applications;

Flat finishes

These are also referred to as matte finishes, they have low light reflection ability. They are good at hiding imperfections on the wall because they are rich in pigment and they are relatively cheap. They are good for ceilings, living rooms, and dining rooms. The main weakness of flat finishes is that they absorb dirt and as such, it is better to avoid using them in rooms that have high traffic.

Eggshell paint finishes

They have a slightly higher gloss than matte finishes though they are not as good at hiding imperfections on the wall. However, they have a longer lifespan than flat finishes and are easier to clean. They are best used in parts of the house that experience low traffic. They can be used in the kitchen or bathroom.

Satin paint finishes

These have a higher gloss than eggshell finishes but they are not very reflective. They are quite popular because they are durable and washable but scrubbing is out of the question. They can be used in areas of the house that see a lot of activity like in hallways and living rooms as well as outdoors. Due to the gloss on satin, it does not hide the imperfections on your wall as much as eggshell and matte finishes.

Semi-gloss finishes

They have a higher gloss than satin finishes and they are more durable. They are also easy to clean and they offer better resistance to stains than matte, satin and eggshell finishes. They can be used in rooms that have moisture as mold doesn't grow easily on them. These features make semi-gloss finishes ideal for high traffic areas in the house. However, any defects such as cracks on the wall are more visible due to the gloss.

High-gloss paint

High gloss paints make the wall look shiny because they have a high reflective ability. They are very durable and resistant to stains and dirt. They are also quite easy to clean. High-gloss paints are good for high traffic areas, furniture, and even outdoors. Their weakness with is that it will show any imperfections on the walls.

Painting

The application of paints usually requires skill as well as proper equipment. A professional painter will not only help you choose the best paint but also prepare the surfaces that need to be painted and apply the paint  so that it will last long.
